A semiconductor memory device and a method for controlling redundancy thereof are provided to reduce total current consumption by preventing unnecessary current consumption due to the operation of a redundancy control part while a refresh mode is performed. A semiconductor memory device comprises a memory cell array(10), a redundancy control unit(100), a comparison unit(70) and a decoding unit(80). The redundancy control unit includes a redundancy setting part, a signal output part, and a control part. The redundancy setting part is stored with defect generation information of the memory cell array and outputs the defect generation information by the input of a selection signal to select a fixed region of the memory cell array. The signal output part outputs a redundancy enable signal according to the defect generation information stored in the redundancy setting part. The control part is connected between the redundancy setting part and a ground stage, and disables the redundancy enable signal by blocking a current path of the redundancy setting part when a refresh signal is enabled. The comparison unit outputs a redundancy selection signal according to the redundancy enable signal and an address. The decoding unit enables a region corresponding to the redundancy selection signal of the region of the memory cell array.
