The engine has a pair of identical and rigid propulsion units (1) connected with respect to each other by mechanical connection e.g. cross bar (44), where each propulsion unit includes a spring piston and a small piston. The cross bar transversely connects a piston rod (42) and the small piston of the propulsion units. Each propulsion unit includes a hot cylinder (2X) for receiving a dilated active fluid and a cold cylinder (2Y) for receiving contracted active fluid, where the cylinders are coaxial and thermally insulated from each other.
