Either atmospheric pressure or superatmospheric pressure high temperature gases, as from a gasifier or other circulating fluidized bed reactor, are filtered using monolithic ceramic filter elements (40, 140, 140', 240, 240') mounted in an advantageous manner within a vessel (12, 112, 212). At least one generally upright hollow chamber element (30, 130, 130', 230) is mounted by a tube plate (22, 122, 122', 222) within the vessel, and has at least one gas impervious side wall (38, 238) having a column of openings (24, 124, 124') in it, an open end (32, 232), and a closed end (34, 234). Monolithic ceramic filter elements (40, 140, 140', 240, 240') are mounted in the openings (24, 124). A number of chamber elements (40, 140, 140', 240, 240') are typically provided, e.g. mounted in a circular pattern, and/or mounted to extend downwardly from a top tube plate (122) and upwardly from a bottom tube plate (122'). Backflushing of the filter elements (40, 140, 140', 240, 240') dislodges separated particles, which fall down to the bottom of the vessel (12, 112, 212) and are removed through a central discharge opening (60, 160). |
