Acetylene, and by-product ethylene, are produced by cracking hydrocarbons at 1000‹ C. or above in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon diluent, e.g. naphthalene, diphenyl, anthracene, and particularly benzene. The diluent may be condensed and recycled. The cracking may be carried out by partial combustion, by pilot flame cracking or by a regenerative furnace, and examples describe the cracking of propane and n-pentane.</p> |
