The eventual detergency effectiveness of a biodegradable detergent alkylate comprising phenyl-n-alkanes having 10-14 carbons in the alkane portion, at least 15% by weight having at least 12, is increased by distilling to recover a lower boiling product fraction having an increased content of mid-chain (4-, 5-, 6- and 7-) phenyl alkanes and a higher boiling fraction comprising 2- and 3-phenyl alkanes having the same number of carbon atoms, isomerizing the higher boiling fraction and returning it to the distillation. Preferably benzene is alkylated with a chlorinated n-alkane fraction and the 2-and 3-phenyl alkane fraction is recycled to the alkylation. Detergent compositions are formulated from sodium alkylbenzene sulphonates prepared from the above alkylates having an increased content of mid-chain isomers. In examples compositions comprise 25% sulphonate, 40% sodium tripolyphosphate, 1% carboxymethyl cellulose, 7% sodium silicate, 8% water and 19% sodium sulphate. |
