A process for preparing beta-amino derivatives of carboxylic acid, their esters, thiolesters, amides and aldehydes comprises reacting carbon monoxide and an active hydrogen contributing compound from water, alcohols, mercaptans, amines and hydrogen, in the presence of a metal carbonyl catalyst of the group consisting of cobalt, rhodium and iridium at a temperature between 80 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. and at a pressure between 800 and 8000 pounds per square inch, with a starting material of an organic compound having at least one ethylenimine linkage thereto and recovering the amino compound from the reacted mass. In an example ethylenimine, water and dicobalt octacarbonyl are charged in a closed container to which carbon monoxide is passed until a pressure between 3000 and 5000 pounds per square inch is obtained, the container is heated to a temperature of 80 DEG to 200 DEG C. for over an hour, the mass is cooled and beta-aminopropionic acid recovered there-from. |
