摘要 A high-molecular weight copolymer, which is cross-linkable by two different methods, and has an intrinsic "Vistex" viscosity (defined) at 30 DEG C. in a toluene-isopropanol mixture (80 : 20 parts by volume) evaluated on the copolymer when obtained in emulsion greater than 0.5 100 ml./g. is constituted by, or has included in its structure, recurring monomeric units of two different types corresponding respectively to the following formula <FORM:1003935/C3/1> where each of R and R1 is a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom, or a methyl group and <FORM:1003935/C3/2> where A is a bivalent organic radical, m is 1 or 200, and R11 is a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom, or a monovalent alkyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, the ratio by weight of the total of the monomeric units of Type I and the monomeric units of Type II being between 98 : 2 and 1 : 4. The copolymers may also contain in their structure monomeric units of another type having the formula <FORM:1003935/C3/3> in which R111 is a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom, or an alkyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and R1111 is a phenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted pyridyl group, a cyanogen group, a carboxy group either as such or esterified, a methoxy group, an ethoxy or a 2-methyl-propoxy group. Polymerization takes place in aqueous emulsion by a free radical mechanism, at a temperature within the range 5 DEG to 60 DEG C. and at a pH within the range 6 to 8. Emulsifiers used must have a low alkaline pH in solution. Conventional redox catalysts are used, and xanthogen disulphides are used as modifiers. The examples relate to the copolymerization of butadiene, styrene and glycidyl acrylate (Example 1), butadiene styrene and glycidyl methacrylate (Examples 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), butadiene, styrene and the glycidyl ether of ortho-vinyl phenol (Example 8). X-Linking and vulcanization through both the unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds and the epoxide groups is exemplified.
