[Also in Division F1] In a rotary pump, a passage 13 connecting a chamber for pumping gears 11 to an outlet pipe-socket 4 houses a non-return valve 16 and a pressure-relief valve 17, the latter being situated adjacent a passage 21 communicating with a reservoir or sump 7 containing a pipe 22, which is connected to an inlet passage 12 on the low-pressure side of the gears. The valve 16 is slidably mounted on one end of a shaft 15 whose other end carries a knob 20, the midportion of the shaft being attached to a flexible diaphragm 23 controlled by a compression spring 19. The valve 17 is constituted by a compressible ring abutting a supporting plate 26, which lies adjacent the diaphragm. In operation, the valve 16 is depressed by fluid flowing in the passage 13; and, in the event of excessive pressure developing in said passage, the valve 17 is compressed by the fluid to effect recirculation by way of the sump 7. Priming of the pump is obtained by manual retraction of the knob 20 against the action of the spring 19 so that first the valve 16 is depressed by a flange on the adjacent end of the shaft 15 engaging with a corresponding flange on said valve and then the valve 17 is compressed by a shoulder 24 on the shaft, thereby permitting circulation of fluid lodged in the sump 7 through the chamber containing the gears 11. |
