1,138,483. Underwater X-ray apparatus. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 26 May, 1966 [1 June, 1965], No. 23582/66. Heading H5R. X-ray apparatus for underwater X-raying of articles, which may be radioactive, comprises, rigidly connected to a support structure having a part 1 extending down into the water: an X-ray source inside an hermetic box 7; a rotatable film-protecting box mount 12 disposed on a vertical shaft 9 ; a guide track 16 for the protecting box 13 which moves on the track to load and unload the mount 12; a motor (26) to rotate the film-protecting box mount; means to control the rotation of the mount and to stop it in the loading and unloading positions and to determine the stop time in these two positions; and remotely controlled means, e.g. plate 17, for supporting the article 20 to be X-rayed. The protecting box mount 12 may be a drum-shaped cylindrical member formed with a recess corresponding in shaped to the protecting box and having a conical-shaped entry (not shown) to facilitate entry of the protecting box. The protecting box may have a balancing mass (25) the guide track 16 may be a rail track. The motor (26) may be a variable speed device operating through a transmission comprising a rotating Maltese cross system (33). The Maltese cross transmits movement to shaft 9 via a gear train (34, 35) providing a step up ratio of 2:1 and is coupled to the motor via an automatically disengaging clutch (31) operated by lever (29) acting on abutment (30). The means for supporting the article 20 may comprise a bottom support member 19 and side retaining flanges 21. The X-ray source may have a shutter opening when the film is in the exposure position, the shutter being controlled by the protecting-box mount-rotating means. The motor may be a step-by-step motor controlled by an electronic circuit. The support structure may be carried on a movable support above water level. The collimator 23 may have an adjustable or interchangeable air screen 24. |
