To ensure true readings from a mass-sensitive detector D, e.g. a flame ionization detector, the necessary supplementary amount of carrier gas is introduced by valve R and line Z into the gas chromatography column effluent stream of carrier gas T and sample component S so as to maintain a constant pressure at a point upstream of throttling means DS. In another embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), the supplementary stream of carrier gas is introduced into line Z at a point between valve R and junction A, the excess amount of gas being controlled by valve R, through which it exhausts. |
