1,129,657. Polyether-amides. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 30 Nov., 1965 [2 Dec., 1964; 18 June, 19651, No. 50786/65. Heading C3R. Copolymers are prepared by reacting (i) a linear polyether of 2nd order transition point below - 30‹ C. and M.W. 500 to 6000, having primary amino groups at each end, and containing secondary amino groups to the extent of 3 to 15 equivalent per cent total amine, with (ii) a diamine and excess of a dicarboxylic acid or urea, which reactants if polymerized alone would give a fibre-forming polyamide or polyurea of M.P. above 230‹ C., the relative proportions of (i) and (ii) being such as will give a copolymer containing 50 to 96 wt. per cent of polyether segments. Extensive lists of diamines and diacids are given specific combinations of polyamide- and polyurea-formers being tabulated in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Modified polyethers.-Reactant (i) above may by an α-#-diaminopolyalkylene oxide which is prepared by ring opening polymerization of at least one cyclic ether in the presence of antimony pentachloride and thionyl chloride or phosgene to form an α- #-dihalopolyalkylene oxide which is then subjected to ammonolysis, e.g. at an ammoniacal partial pressure of 30 to 110 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in the presence of an alkali capable of absorbing halogen. The cyclic ether may be tetrahydrofuran or a mixture thereof with an epoxy, oxacyclobutane or oxacyclopentane compound, several being specified. |
