A rectilinear guide bar or toothed rack 8 of trapezoidal cross-section, is secured in a similarly shaped groove 10 in a machine tool 9 by inwardly deforming the edges 13 and 14 of the groove. The deformation can be applied by a roll 20, Fig. 8, having shoulders 21 and 22 which straddle the bar or rack. A further roller 24 precedes the roll 20 and serves to apply the bar or rack against the groove bottom. The roll 20 is freely rotatable on the shaft 19 of a tool carrier 18, whilst the roller 24 is pivotally mounted on the carrier and urged against the work by adjustable spring pressure. The roll 20 may be in several parts, to enable the spacing of the shoulders to be varied. Several rolls or rollers may be provided in tandem and each roller 24 may be carried independently of the carrier 18. |
