To prevent hydrogen embrittlement, the zirconium or zirconium alloy component is metallically joined to another alloy which has a higher affinity for hydrogen. This can be yttrium or an yttrium alloy or a rare earth metal or an alloy of it. The joint between the two is obtained by fusion melting or diffusion melting.
