1,225,643. Apparatus for forming ZnO. AGFA - GEVAERT A.G. 28 June, 1968 [1 July, 1967], No. 30898/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus, for the production of zinc oxide by combustion of Zn vapour followed by thermal after-treatment of the ZnO, comprises an axially symmetrical chamber 1 (preferably air- or water-cooled at 2) provided with an axial inlet 11 for Zn vapour and at least one tangential inlet 3 for oxygen or air and an after-treatment chamber (not shown). The chamber 1 is provided with a first coaxial annular nozzle 5 through which a reducing gas, e.g. H 2 , is introduced, either so that the gas forms a cylinder around the chamber axis or so that it forms a right circular cone having a half-angle α at its apex, where 0 degrees <α< 90 degrees. O 2 or air is supplied from a second coaxial annular nozzle 6 so as to form a cone of gas whose apex lies within the chamber 1, the half-angle (# at the apex being such that 0 degrees <# <90 degrees. Chamber 1 may be of stainless steel, of quartz glass or quartz-lined, and entry section 9 may be of quartz glass or boron nitride. Reducing gas from 5 prevents ZnO deposition around inlet 11; the oxygen or air from 6 ensures a stable flame; while the oxygen or air from 3 prevents wall deposition and ensures stoichiometric reaction. |
