1,222,275. Hydrodynamic bearing. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 28 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 14983/68. Heading F2A. In a hydrodynamic bearing for axial and radial loads having a shaft 2 carrying a flange 3 accommodated in a recess in a housing 4, the bearing surface of either the flange or the housing is provided with a plurality of grooves 8 which contain lubricant and in which pressure is created on rotation of the shaft relative to the housing, lubricant being urged to the thrustbearing surface by means of helical grooves provided in either the cylindrical surface of the shaft, or the corresponding surface of the housing. The recess in the housing communicates with the outside of the housing only through the bore accommodating the shaft. In one embodiment, when grease is used as lubricant, an annular chamber 10 is provided in the shaft to act as a lubricant reservoir from which helical grooves 11 extend in the shaft towards the flange and a pattern of helical grooves 12 extend in the other direction from the chamber to act as a seal for the grease. A duct 15 may be provided to lead grease from the recess back to the chamber 10. |
