1,216,903. Lasers. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. 20 Feb., 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8288/68. Heading H1C. An optically-pumped solid state laser rod has one end tapered to a point so as to obtain uniform gain throughout the cross-section despite the non-uniform radial penetration of pumping intensity inherent to the arrangement. A 5% neodymium-doped glass rod 1, Fig. 1, which is pumped by a helical flash tube 2, forms one stage of plural cascaded laser amplifiers, one end of the rod being conical. A cylindrical silica casing 3 containing a silicone oil 4, both being transparent to the pumping and laser radiations, is fitted to the pointed end of the rod so as to provide a plane light-emitting face. The casing may alternatively be of undoped glass containing tetrachloroethylene. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pointed end of the laser rod has a curved profile. The arrangement may be used in a laser amplifying chain. A ruby active medium with a sapphire casing may be used. |
