Pores in graphite are filled with non-graphitising vitreous C. This can be produced by baking and carbonising synthetic resin of furfural, acetone/furfural, phenol/furfural, di- or tri-vinylbenzene, phenol/-formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol, vinylfuran, polyester and/or epoxide type, by heating above decomposition temp. Graphite is impregnated with resin, which is cured, then baked and carbonised at 350-3000, pref. 700-1600 degrees C. - Vitreous C causes great reduction in wear of graphite anode, although it is unsuitable for use as anode alone, since it cannot be used at high current density, has poor mechanical strength and cannot be produced in massive form.
