In a spin drier comprising a basket wall 30 which is lifted from its normal position resting on a frusto-conical basket bottom 31 in order to discharge dry washing from the basket 7, at least one stripper 83, 84 is attached to the upper end of the bottom 31 and extends substantially radially outwards, so that washing is prevented from being entrained in the water outlets 32 in the basket wall 30 (or by woven mesh screens 91 and 92, if used). The basket is divided by a diametral wall 70, 70 into two compartments 71 and 72 each provided with strippers 83 and 84 having bent ends 87, 88 and 89, 90 which may be extended peripherally until they meet. The screens 91 and 92 each comprise wire or synthetic filaments woven in a twill or sateen pattern so that the inner surfaces of the screens 91 and 92 have preferential sliding directions down the wall 30. A coarse screen (not shown) may be interposed between the screens 91 and 92 and the wall 30 to assist flow of water. An electropneumatic catch 8, 23 retains the flaps 9 (as shown) during automatic loading of the basket 7 via hinged shoot 15, shoot 13, and tiltable hopper 10. When the catch 23 releases the flaps 9, an upper bush 21 linked thereto at 20 slides down the shaft 6 until it abuts a lower bush 73 supporting the wall 30 (and slidable therewith). Air is trapped in an annular space between the bushes 21 and 73 to cushion the impact. |
