(A) Penicillin derivs. of general formula (I): R=phenyl, substd. phenyl, furyl or thienyl; R1=phenyl, substd. phenyl, naphthyl, substd. naphthyl or the group R"=H, alkyl, phenyl, halomethyl or alkylsulphonylmethyl; X=halogen or a nitro-, alkoxy-, aryloxy-, aralkoxy-, alkylsulphonyl-, arylsulphonyl- or aralkylsulphonyl group; Y and Z are same or different H, halogen, methyl or ethyl When X=alkoxy or aralkoxy, Y + Z may be -O- The compounds (I) may be in L- or D-form or DL-mixtures. (B) Salts of (I) such as non-toxic metal salts, ammonium- and substd. ammonium salts, or non-toxic amine salts such as those with benzylpenicillin. The new derivs. are active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and are valuable therapeutics and prophylactic against infections in animals, including man and poultry.
