This heat exchanger is used for heat transfer between fluids at different pressures and the fluid flowing through the tubes has a high inlet temperature. Thermal forces generated are diverted from expanding tubes into the heat exchanger shell through an additional end plate near inlet end. This end plate rests loosely on the step in the vessel wall and the tubes rest on this plate through their spider supports. This arrangement protects a relatively thin end plate from high thermal stresses.
