[Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Articles such as glass receptacles for blood, metal and plastics surgical instruments and silicone prosthetic devices and implants, examples of which are given, are coated with a composition consisting essentially of an organosilicon quaternary ammonium halide containing groups of the general formula [R 3 N+R<SP>1</SP>Si#]X<SP>-</SP>, wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-18 divalent hydrocarbon radical; X is a halogen atom, and at least one free 'bond of the silicon atom is attached to a hydrolysable atom or radical, or to a silicon atom through a Si-O bond, or through a divalent hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether radical, the remaining free bonds of the silicon atom being atached to a monovalent radical compatible with the quaternary ammonium substituent, followed by a coating of heparin to prevent or retard undesirable clotting of blood when the blood is in contact with the surface of the article. Examples of surgical devices to which the coating may be applied include catheters and other tubes, heart valve and mammary prostheses, capsules for implanted electronic devices, and sponge implant material. |
