[Also in Division C3] Apparatus for evaporating a volatile component from a viscous liquid, for use for example in the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate, comprise elongated vessel 1; means to create a vacuum within the vessel; inlet and outlet means for the liquid; at least one spoked wheel mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis 2 or 3 within the vessel, the spokes of the wheel(s) shown as 4 (for lower viscosity liquids) or 5 (for higher viscosity liquids) being curved in the plane of rotation of the wheels; and fixed pins 8 or 9, which may have triangular cross-section, attached to the bottom of the vessel and extending into the vessel in planes perpendicular to the axis of the wheel with one pin at each side of the or each wheel, which pins are arranged to be at an angle to the passing spokes as the wheel rotates. The rim of the wheel may be narrower in axial dimension than the spokes (as 7 in Fig. 3, not shown) or may comprise two rings 6 one mounted on each side of the ends of the spokes (Fig. 2, not shown). Plates 12 fixed to the bottom of the vessel serve to tear the film of liquid from the inner surface of the vessel. 10 and 11 are overflow partitions. |
