[Also in Division B8] In boxes formed from blanks 40 which may be of ordinary or resin-impregnated paper, cardboard, metal foil or sheet metal gaps between adjacent sides are filled by the injection of synthetic plastics material. Thermoplastics or uncured resins may be used and linear polyethylene and polypropylene are specifically mentioned. The injection-moulding machine, Fig. 27, comprises a female die 67 which is in two laterally movable parts guided by tongues 68 and moved by hydraulically operated rods 75 and a male die 76 on a supporting plate 77. The blank 40 may be held on the male die 76 by vacuum means (not shown) and is brought vertically down on to the die 67. The plate 77 is positioned by studs 65 and fingers 79 on the plate pass through holes 83 into recesses 84 where, on compression of springs 62, they cooperate with curved surfaces 86 thereby moving inwardly to fully close the female die. Moulding cavities 73, 74 allow formation of a lid and hinge for the box and a stripping mechanism comprising a stripping pin 89 which is brought flush with the surface of the male die when the latter is lowered, but is forced downwards by a spring 92 and lever 90 when the die is raised, strips the lid from the die. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, a box with moulded corners 18 is removed from the female die 23 by vacuum means operating in the male die 22. |
