The leading pair and one or more trailing pairs of electrodes are each aligned so that production of the fillets occurs simultaneously, the current supplied to the leading electrodes being less than, and pref. about half of that, supplied to the trailing electrodes. Current may be supplied by a three-phase transformer having the primary windings delta connected and the secondaries star- connected with the neutral connected to one of the plates to be welded. The primary and secondary of at least one phase may be divided into pairs, the secondary pair being connected to the leading electrodes.
