Clay-contng. crude K salts extracted from the sea are conditioned with 5-300 (pref. 50-150) g/t. lactic acid in combination with 100-500 (pref. 30-150) g./t. halocarboxylic acids, pref. mono or tri-chloroacetic acid, and heated at 2-20 (2.5-10)% relative humidity, charged with contact elasticity heated to 20-65 (pref. 30-50) degrees C. and in an electrostatic separation step clay minerals separate at the +ve electrode while clay-free crude salt is separated at -ve electrode and middlings are recycled and mixed with initial feed. - Pref. 5-30 t./hr. clay-contng. crude K salt is passed through on each meter electrode width, and mixing time for crude K salts with clay-specific materials is 10-60 secs.
