A self-copolymerizable resinous composition comprises a mixture of a linear monoester or polyester obtained by condensing (a) at least one a ,b -unsaturated dibasic acid and (b) at least one 6-hydroxy-3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoindene of formula <FORM:0996745/C3/1> with one or more peroxides, the molar ratio of components (a) and (b) being in the range 1 : 10 to 10 : 1. In the Examples: (1) the methanoindene is reacted with maleic anhydride and propylene glycol and the polyester formed is cured with benzoyl peroxide or di-t-butyl peroxide; in the latter case the resin may then be further cured with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide; (2) a monoester formed from the methanoindene and maleic anhydride is cured in two stages, first using di-tert-butyl peroxide and then methyl ethyl ketone peroxide in the presence of cobalt naphthenate, (3) and (4) polyesters are formed from the methanoindene and maleic anhydride and either (a) propylene glycol and 3,6-endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid or (b) coconut oil fatty acids, adipic acid and diethylene glycol. |
