Audio frequency or ultrasonic vibrations are communicated to liquid to be filtered, whilst it is flowing perpendicularly towards filter medium surface, the vibrations being parallel to the surface and of amplitude greater than the diameter of the pores, so that resultant of the two velocity components imparted to the particles is such that the particles impinge on surface at an angle and do not penetrate into pores, even though they are of smaller diameter than the pores. Blocking of filter is prevented and length of life of filter increased.
