<p>Esp. for effluent with high content of non-biodegradable impurities which are sepd. by flotation using microbubbles of hydrogen produced by the reaction of water with activated Al in the amalgam, the use of an amalgam preventing the formation of an alumina film which impairs the activity. The impurities are then skimmed from the surface whilst the cleared water is extracted by syphoning. In its simplest form the plant has a single flotation tank, with sump for heavy precipitated sludge, the raw sewage inlet being at approx half the height of one side wall and plates of activated Al amalgam being placed below the level of that inlet so that microbubbles pass through almost the whole height. A surface skimmer removes the floated impurities and at the opposite side to the inlet a syphon wall is immersed in the tank on the other side of which is the overflow run-off for the partly treated effluent which can then be further treated e.g. by aerobic etc. methods.
