A can trimming mechanism comprises a rotatable can support 26 and upper cutter 28, which co-operates with a cutter blade sector 36, mounted on a rotatable wheel 35, to trim a can 10 forming a ring of scrap 10<SP>1</SP> which is transversely severed and formed into a corrugated strip by a knurl roller 29 and a co-operating knurling section 45 mounted on the wheel 35. As described, a can 10 is dropped from a supply shoot or conveyer into a pocket of a star wheel 12 which is indexed so that a piston rod 18 may extend to push a can over a support 25, flexible mandrel 26 and upper knife 28. The can bottom is supported by a rotatable swivel (20) mounted on the end of the piston rod 18. After the can has been sheared, the support 25 is pneumatically retracted and the can pushed by the swivel (20) to cause the scrap ring 10<SP>1</SP> to be pushed on to the knurl roller 29. The trimmed can is then replaced in the pocket of the star wheel 12 by extending the support 25 and retracting the piston rod 18. Meanwhile, the scrap ring 10<SP>1</SP> is transversely sheared by the first teeth of the knurling section 45 as it engages the knurl roller 29 and the sheared ring formed into a corrugated strip which falls away from the machine. |
