Prodn. of unsatd. alcohols with an oligomerised conj. alkadiene chain structure, including the novel and claimed cpd. 6-vinyl-2,8,13-tetradecatrien-1-ol, is by reacting a conj. diene and water in presence of CO2 and a catalyst consisting of: (i) a Pd cpd.; and (ii) a cpd. having at least one (trivalent.P)-to-O single bond, with certain such cpds. being novel and claimed, viz the phosphonites of formulae (I) and (II). Also claimed are (1) bis(phosphonite ) Pd complexes of certain phosphonites; and (2) prodn. of the corresp. satd. alcohols by adding a final hydrogenation step. A<31> = opt. substd. aryl or alkyl with proviso that the alkyl is free of beta -position branching; A<34> = alkyl or aryl with beta -position branching; A<32> and A<33> = different arylene within alkyl substits; A<35> and A<36> = different opt. substd. arylene; x<2> and y<2> = 0 or 1; Q<2> = -CR<41>R<42>-, -O-, -S-, -SO2-, -NR<43>-, -SiR<44>R<45>- or -CO-; R<41> and R<42> = H, 1-12 C alkyl, Ph, tolyl or anisyl; R<43> - R<45> = H or Me; and n = 0 or 1.
