The lid is shaped to match the lighter casing and closes along a flange (6) of the casing. The lid is hinged about a pin (10) which rotates against a spring (16) fixed to the casing. The spring (16) will cause the lid to slap shut after use. The back edge of the lid comes into contact with the plate (22) when it opens. The plate terminates in a fork (25) which fits under the fuel valve. The fork lifts the valve open as the lid opens and closes the valve when the lid is closed.
