A device is used to reduce the noise produced on impact when metal bars are stacked on racks. It is simple and robust and may be adapted to bars with square, circular or other cross section. The bars are normally stacked on arc retainers (11) (12) and are fed by gravity along rails (22, 23). Two rotating plates (13, 14) are fitted at the ends of the rails (22, 23) and before the bars fall into the arc retainers (11, 12). the plates (13, 14) are pressed onto a spindle (15). The spindle (15) is connected to a lever (19) and a push-pull rod (18). The arc retainers (11, 12) have notches (20) into which the bars are located before being allowed to fall the retainers.
