PURPOSE:To provide a production method of a new monolithic catalyst for purification of exhaust gas by which a catalyst carrying layer having uniform and proper thickness can be formed on the surface of a monolithic carrier and strong adhesion is obtd. between the carrier and the carrying layer. CONSTITUTION:This monolithic catalyst is obtd. by forming a carrying layer containing metal oxide on the surface of a monolithic carrier and depositing a catalyst metal on the carrying layer. In this production process, the carrying layer is formed by producing the metal oxide by hydrolysis of the source material of the metal oxide.
