NEW MATERIAL:A polymerizable compound expressed by the formula (R1-R5 are methyl, ethyl or phenyl). EXAMPLE:[3-(4-Ethenylphenyl)-tert-pentoxy]trimethylsilane. USE:A monomer for producing polymers, modifier for composite materials, etc., capable of providing functional high polymers having silicon atoms in the side chain and useful as one component of polymers for oxygen-permeable membranes, photoresists and electron ray resists. PREPARATION:Vinyltoluene having lithiated methyl group is reacted with an oxirane compound and chlorosilane compound, as necessary, in an inert solvent,e. g. THF, etc., preferably at -30-+50 deg.C for 30min-50hr. The lithiated vinyltoluene is preferably prepared by the presence of diisopropylamine and an alkyllithium in the above-mentioned reaction system and reacting the formed diisopropyllithium with vinyltoluene.
