PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst excellent in catalytic activity and also less in activity deterioration by having an aggregate of ceramic fibers support a specified amount or more of active manganese oxide. CONSTITUTION:An aggregate of ceramic fibers used for a catalyst carrier is specified to be a sheet-type aggregate of highly heat-resisting inorganic fibers such as silica fiber, alumina fiber, etc., which are connected with one another by silica gel and whose wall has 0.1cc/g or more, preferably 0.2cc/g or more pores of 5,000Angstrom or larger in diameter between the fibers. An active manganese oxide, which has 0.02cc/g or more, preferably 0.05cc/g or more pores of 100-2,000Angstrom in diameter, is supported by the aforementioned aggregate at least in an amount of 20g/l in terms of Mn. A long life catalyst excellent in catalytic activity and less in activity deterioration is thus obtained by fully utilizing the gas permeability and large effective surface of the catalyst carrier. |
