Process for separating fine particles of high specific gravity solids from emulsions and apparatus for carrying out the process

In a process for separating fine particles of high specific gravity solids, preferably metals, from a starting product in the form of sludgy or sticky emulsions, preferably oil/water emulsions, a continuous current of the starting product is effected by mixing the product with water. In a sedimentation range of this product current, the fine particles of the high specific gravity solid to be separated off sink. The product current is superimposed by a fluid current directed transversely to its flow direction, which fluid current overflows the lateral demarkation of the former and essentially entrains the constituents of the product current present above the sunken fine solids particles, so that in this manner separation is performed only with the use of water and thus without exhaust gas and in an environmentally friendly manner. In addition, an apparatus for carrying out the process is described. The process and the apparatus can be used especially for an environmentally friendly treatment of mill scale (roll scale).
