PURPOSE: To prepare a compound useful as a humidifier in cosmetics. CONSTITUTION: This humidifier is a compound of formula I or II R<1> is H or a 1-4C alkyl; R<2> is H, COOH; a CO-O-(1-4C alkyl) or CO-NH-R<5> ; R<3> and R<4> are each H or OH; R<5> is H, a 1-4C alkyl an amino acid residue, a dipeptide or a tripeptide}, e.g. (S)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidine carboxylic acid, and is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV in the presence of an alcohol (in the case that R<2> is H or COOH). A cosmetic capable of protecting and preventing senile, dried or apt to be inflamed skin is obtained by containing 0.1-10 wt.% of the compound of formula I or II.
