The vehicle collision preventing apparatus and method is comprised of installing a video camera part(10) equipped with two video cameras in left and right parts of front of a vehicle, taking a picture of a preceding vehicle to obtain an information about it; an image processing part(20) density-converting a video signal information about the preceding vehicle obtained from the video camera part(10) and binary displaying to find an outline; a controlling part(30) being provided with an image of the object on a road obtained from the image processing part(20) to select specific portion of the image, then converting position of the specific portions of the image displayed in the cameras in both sides into the angles to find a distance from the vehicle, then outputting to a decelerating part(40), an accelerating part(50) and an alarming part(60) depending on the results.
