PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum washing machine which can detect the amount or eccentricity of cloth to wash contained in the drum washing machine more accurately than before by the input voltage imposed to a motor M by a phase control until the motor M reaches a preset number of rotations and to provide its method for detecting the amount of cloth. SOLUTION: This washing machine has a motor M which rotates a drum, and a controller 20 which controls the number of rotations of the motor M according to washing processes, calculates the ratio (MV) of the input voltages impressed to the motor M and judges the amount of cloth of laundries contained in the drum. By this constitution, the amount of cloth contained in the washing machine can be detected accurately with fine steps and therefore the amount of water to use can be reduced and uniform cleanness can be achieved. In addition, even a single load which has a large eccentricity such as jeans and towels is in the washing machine, the washing machine can detect the accurate amount of cloth and can enhance the accuracy of eccentricity detection required during its water expulsion process.
