PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition exhibiting excellent storage stability and curability that has a crosslinking system comprised of a carboxy group (acid anhydride group)/an epoxy group. SOLUTION: The coating composition comprises as essential ingredients (A) a compound bearing a carboxy group and/or a cyclic acid anhydride group, (B) a polyepoxide and (C) a latent curing catalyst constituted of (a) a tertiary amine and (b) an acidic phosphate ester. The coating composition particularly comprises as the tertiary amine (a) a compound represented by general formula: R<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>R<SB>3</SB>N (wherein R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are the same or different and are each a hydrocarbon group; and at least one of R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>is an 8C or higher hydrocarbon group and the hydrogen atoms in the hydrocarbon groups may be substituted with halogen or a hydroxy group).
