PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve distinction accuracy when determining a specific stroke from a plurality of strokes in a cycle based on an angular velocity of a crankshaft, in an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine E is provided with the stroke distinction means 44 for determining a compression process from four strokes in a cycle based on the angular velocity of the crankshaft 5. The stroke distinction means 44 is provided with an angular velocity set means 45 for setting a front side angular velocityωf at a front side phase in a reluctor 31a of a crank angle sensor 30 and a rear side angular velocityωr at a rear side phase in a reluctor 31b and a change amount calculation means 46 for calculating a first deceleration between a front side angular velocityωf and a rear side angular velocityωr in a first stroke and a second deceleration between a front side angular velocityωf and a rear side angular velocityωr in a second stroke wherein one of the compression stroke and an exhaust stroke is determined as the first stroke and the other one is determined as the second stroke.
