A polyarylene sulphide foam has a density reduced by at least 50 % compared with the theoretical density of non-foamed material. In order to produce the polyarylene sulphide foam, polyarylene sulphoxide is subjected alone or mixed with one or several polyarylene sulphides to a thermal treatment at a temperature in a range from 250 to 400 DEG C.
