PURPOSE:To obtain fiber reinforced ceramics having high strength and toughness by impregnating a ceramics precursor into the gaps of a molding consisting of short ceramics fibers and ceramics powder and converting the impregnated ceramics precursor to ceramics, then sintering the entire part. CONSTITUTION:The short ceramics fibers and ceramics powder are mixed and after the mixture is molded, the liquid ceramics precursor is impregnated into the gaps of the molding. This impregnated molding is then heated to convert the ceramics precursor to the ceramics and is thereafter sintered by which the molding is compacted to the higher density. Fibers selected from whiskers consisting of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and alumina are preferable as the short ceramics fibers. The powder contg. >=70% any among silicon carbide, silicon nitride, alumina, mullite and zirconia is preferable as the ceramics powder. Polycarbosilane, polysilane, polysilazane, polyaluminoxane, polysiloxane, alumina sol, silica sol, zirconia sol, hydrocarbon resin, etc., are preferable as the ceramics precursor. |
