In a combination of a character code recording machine such as the strip-perforator disclosed in Specification 763,463 and a character reproducing machine such as the photocomposing machine disclosed in Specification 906,113, or a proportional spacing typewriter, the characters are each assigned a width comprising an integral number of units and optionally a fraction (e.g. 1/ 3 or 2/ 3 ) of a unit. In the reproducer, the integral and fractional spacing is applied to the film or typewriter carriage by main and supplementary electromagnetic escapement devices. In the recorder, which also produces a typewritten copy for reference, the integral spacing is applied to the carriage and the fractional spacing stored until it amounts to an integer, when the carriage is moved through the additional integer. |
