A tumbler dryer comprises a rotatable drum 3 and conduit 6 forming a substantially Closed circuit, a fan for circulating air in the circuit, a thermostatically controlled electric heater 11, an evaporator 8 and a condenser 9 of a heat pump for condensing water from the moist air and heating the air respectively and a trap 13 for collecting condensed water. Air may be vented from the circuit and replaced by cool air. The dryer may include means for stopping the drying operation after an appropriate period, which may be of a predetermined length or may be determined by sensing the degree of wetness of the articles being dried in the drum or of the air circulating in the conduit 6. |
