1283938 Reconstituted tobacco HENKEL & CIE GmbH 3 Dec 1969 [4 Dec 1968] 58925/69 Heading A2C Tobacco dust or a water-based paste thereof is mixed with an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose which contains 0.05 to 2.5 carboxymethyl groups per anhydro-glucose unit so as to form a shapeable mass which can be formed into a film or foil and dried. Wet-strength improvers such as tannins or divalent aldehydes, softeners such as polyhydric alcohols, and fillers such as kaolin, bentonite &c. or fibres of tobacco, cellulose or glass, may be added. In an example, commercial methyl cellulose, with 1.7 methoxy groups per anhydroglucose unit, is moistened with caustic soda liquor and neutralised monochloroacetic acid and the mixture stored for 20 hours at 60‹C after which it is diluted with water together with magnesium oxide, potassium nitrate and aqueous glyoxal solution and allowed to stand at room temperature for 16 hours. The resulting solution is mixed with a water-based paste of tobacco dust, phosphoric acid being added to adjust the pH value to 5, and a layer of the mixture is spread on a stainless steel sheet and dried at 100‹C. |
