Uracil-4-methyl-xanthines having pharmaceutical - activity similar to caffein

New compounds have the formula: (where R is a xanthine, e.g. theophylline, theobromine, 8-(chloro or bromo theophylline). They are prepared by reacting 4-halo(chloro)methyl-uracil with a xanthine in the presence of an alkali (NaOH or KOH) for removing the halogen acid. Reaction can be carried out using a salt of the xanthine in water at 40 degrees C-90 degrees C.
