Appropriate temp. of 5 - 50 degrees is maintained by performing the reaction under reduced pressure. Unreacted SO2Cl2 may be recycled and the reaction can be run as a continuous process. o-Cresol is converted into 4-chloro - 2 methylcresol in at least 93% yield; the rest being 6-chloro and dichloro cresols.
