Sulphur and other contaminants are removed from a hydrocarbon stream by contacting the stream in at least two stages with molten alkali-metal hydroxide containing 5 to 30% by weight of water based on total reagent. The process may be carried out at 400‹ to 800‹ F. in an open vessel or an autoclave. The amount of hydroxide used in each stage may be from 10 to 200% by weight of the hydrocarbon. Examples are given of two- and three-stage processes.
