The cartridge has normal cap and propellent (a nitrocellulose fibre is preferred). In front of these is a gas-sealing wad containing a small central hole, used to propel the canister containing the active agent up the bore. The canister may be of metal, glass, paper, plastics or similar. A delay composition of metal and metal oxide type (zirconium, boron, red lead or other known compounds) is stemmed into the rear of the main filling under a disc containing the emission hole. The main filling consists of fuel (sugar, aluminium or other metal powder), oxidant (chlorates, nitrates etc.), burning rate control (magnesium carbonate or inert substance) and binder (nitrocellulose or other high polymer); this burns at a stabilised rate to volatilize the active agent used. A range of 500 m. is possible. Missile is a canister containing a fuel-oxidant mixture together with an agent dispersed as an aerosol either on leaving the barrel of shotgun etc. as a trail along the trajectory, or with delay so as to be emitted in the target area, e.g. filling of CS lachrymator gas (Orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile), smoke, illuminant, insecticide, herbicide, etc.
